The itinerary might change depending on your pick up location.
Not recommended on weekends. The climate conditions may not always allow the trip, and even change while you're at the Island, endangering the return. Some people get seasick on the boat trip.
ADVICES : Don’t forget your towel, shorts (for a swim) and sunscreen. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will do some walking through steep paths. You’re free to bring your own lunch if you want! There is only one restaurant where to eat.
You could easily imagine yourself as being part of a pirate movie while at Berlenga Island. The peer, the cliffs surrounding the bay and the Lighthouse on the top of the hill make it the perfect landscape, in which to spend a marvellous day, hiking, snorkelling, swimming, and kayaking. After a short trip on air-conditioned mini-van, you’ll arrive at Peniche, where you’ll take a boat to the Berlenga Island, some 10km off the coast. On arrival, and after a brief relaxation after the boat trip, you’ll head to St. John Baptist Fort for a visit. The Fort was built in the XVII century and was an important part of the shore defence system. There are stories about the brave soldiers which defended it when attacked by the Spanish Fleet.
Afterwards, the group will walk through the Natural Reserve authorized paths back to the Port, admiring the amazing views in this UNESCO Biosphere Heritage Site. At the Port, there is free time for lunch (not included), or for a quick swim or snorkelling (equipment provided) at the beach nearby. There is only one restaurant at the Island, but is of good quality and fresh fish is always available, as it is typical in a fishing location like this. For those who prefer to bring a snack, the only beach in the island is just some steps away. Snorkelling there is really a good option, as the sea life is abundant and the waters are calm.
After lunch, there will be chance to kayak around the island (included) or for a small boat-tour visiting the caves (included). The island cliffs are filled with caves and it is a joy to kayak through them. For the less active people, there is the option of touring the caves in a small glass bottom boat, from where not only the caves as the life below can be seen. By then, it is time to take the boat back to the mainland and drive back to Lisbon.
After picking you up at your accommodation, we will head North of Lisbon to Peniche, a seaside city with an important fishing harbour now better known as the Portuguese Surf Capital;
There we will take the boat out to Berlenga Island, 10 kilometers from the Peniche coast (the sea is often rough, making this trip a true adventure);
Sail to the Forte S. João Batista, an ancient fortress on the other side of the cliffs. Here we can visit the old fort, where Portuguese soldiers resisted to the big Spanish fleet, many times superior in numbers;
Either by foot or boat, head back to the docks, where you can have lunch, swim or do some snorkelling;
If the sea is calm enough, we recommend kayaking to explore the cliffs and its beautiful caves.
